Agricultural Development on the global Agenda again!
Since the publication of The Worldbank’s “World Development Report 2008” on Agriculture for Development agriculture in developing countries is, after years of neglect, fortunately receiving a lot of attention again.
It is indeed a proven fact that in particular in the South the private agricultural sector can be the backbone of any developing economy and of key importance to create jobs, food security and even export possibilities earning highly needed FX-income.
However, widespread lack of (access to) finance, still remains one of the main obstacles in enabling a sustainable development of the agricultural sector in the South. Various studies reveal that just a fraction of the sector is financed through the formal financial sector. This so-called “finance-gap” in agriculture in the South is estimated at tens of billions USD annually, if not more.
